• El shipibo, como hombre de la Selva, está en íntimo contacto con su entorno y forma parte de él, lo aprovecha sabiamente. De alguna manera sabe que todo está interrelacionado. El conocimiento de esta vinculación que presentan todos los elementos conformadores de esta bioesfera, la representan en todos los originales y enigmáticos diseños presentados en sus objetos artesanales. • Los Shipibo han desarrollado un arte con diseños geométricos de gran sofisticación, ricos en significado. El mundo entero de los Shipibo está lleno de diseños que pasan del mundo visible al mundo invisible y de regreso. • Estos diseños tuvieron un código de significado, una escritura esotérica, relacionada con la cosmología shipibo y su visión del universo, ahora el significado de esos diseños casi se han perdido. Ellos dicen que el cielo lleno de estrellas es igual que abajo, todo lleno de caminos, hacen sus faldas bordadas de blanco sobre fondo negro para representar la luz de las estrellas, forman diseños porque ellos ven estos caminos en el cielo. • Los cuatro colores sagrados para los Shipibos son el rojo, el amarillo, el blanco y el negro, los colores rojo, amarillo y blanco son asociados con el sol, el verde, azul y negro con la luna, es costumbre utilizar colores complementarios para buscar el equilibrio en todo. • Es responsabilidad del chamán rescatar los diseños del mundo celestial y transmitirlos a las mujeres. La reproducción de los diseños en todos los objetos de la cultura material daba poder y protección a la vivienda, a las personas y al grupo entero. Visto desde esta perspectiva la pérdida de los motivos tradicionales significaría no solamente un empobrecimiento del ambiente, sino también del espíritu. La mujer shipibo se expresa creativamente por el arte del dibujo. Diseños geométricos de gran complejidad son transmitidos de madre a hija. Los motivos pueden aparecer en el sueño o en estados alterados por la ingestión de plantas psicotrópicas. También la mujer puede solicitarlos directamente al chamán. Una gran artista es respetada en todo el territorio shipibo. Sus diseños son estudiados y admirados por las demás mujeres. Las grandes artistas practican disciplinas espirituales como ayunos y la abstención sexual para incrementar el poder de su imaginación y mejorar sus habilidades creadoras. • El motivo central al diseño shipibo es Ronín, la serpiente cósmica que combina todos los diseños imaginables en su piel. En el tiempo mitológico mostró su piel a la mujer shipibo ancestral. Esta cruz invisible está representada por la constelación de la Cruz del Sur que domina el cielo del Ucayali durante los meses de sequía.
