What crosses our mind when we think of a ride on Lake Yarinacocha? - I asked when we met up with some tourists to our lake. And the answer was fresh air, see forest species, watching the sparse but graceful dolphins, or even happy thinking that there may be different ways of life within its waters. I know they will be amazed, I kept thinking, with a smile on my lips. But unfortunately, the reality was quite contrary.
It is not known when or how, but last Sunday in January was one of the days that shaped, and shape, the chain of death hours picked for display on our signature lake, one that gives us life. Only this time it covered with his cloak to other humans who are somehow able to defend themselves. Instead, its ominous and mocking face, as an endless spectacle that filled the hours between sunrise and sunset, took a grin of bitterness and swelling, this time in the bodies of helpless. In effect, gently rocked by the waves caused by boats, dozens of large and medium turushuquis floated inert.
And this just a few meters from the harbor, with plenty of presence of people.
It was inevitable then do not talk and complain about the increasing absence of life around us, shining with the afternoon sun. For many of us, the sadness was deeper, because we understood that we are altering the environment at a rate much faster than we might think. We all knew in advance that there was any contamination on Yarinacocha, and aquatic species are increasingly away, but we never imagined we would come to this point: having to hobnob with death, feel the aroma and feel their presence. None of those who were on the boat appreciated before this reality for our water, completely transformed in a few years. We started to shuffle possibilities, and we stayed with that seemed most logical: the reckless poisoning of fish-poisoning or other substance, as alleged best way to catch them. And then the biker gave us some details that could help to decipher the truth: it appears that this species, which inhabit the tributaries and rivers near our lake, was thrown there by someone who, frightened by the voice of conscience , wanted to get rid of the sample of his crime. And this death did not serve even for the benefit of other species as it is potentially poisonous fish, no bird, heron or dare to fly the bodies.
What is happening to us? If the lake is the main source of pride for all Pucallpa, we show that this feeling is genuine and truly committed to their preservation, and arrangement of ornament which by the way, often seems unhealthy and chaotic, and further highlight the natural attraction, it becomes frightening and serves to scare away the tourists. And that is, to a greater extent the responsibility of our authorities. Promises of receipt of this gift of nature should not remain just that: they must transcend beyond the words, programs and measures to monetarily punish those who destroy our environment, and with prizes for those who contribute to its preservation. Also part of this responsibility rests with employers whose businesses benefit from our lake. They must ensure that the waters do not become uninhabitable with the discharge of wastewater, and are also responsible for reducing pollution levels. Their work, in collaboration with our government and society in general, should focus on positive activities, which could be made even in a day of commemoration for our lake, or a whole week where work is done for her, and promote sports, cooking contests and science fairs and reforestation, among others. But this is not possible if the water level drops every year. Therefore, to avoid the rain - in short, the main contributor to our rivers are less scarce and / or space, we should avoid the indiscriminate felling of trees, and the reckless burning of secondary forest, no trees because the watershed is a river without water. Otherwise, the other conservation measures will be for naught.
Hopefully this time I understand. Failure to do so, all that is left to feel nostalgic about ten years ago, unlike now, there was a place where life flowed in torrents, to the bewilderment of future generations who may not understand why the sadness overwhelms us to remember something they never saw.

Leyendas de la Selva ( YACUMAMA)
YACUMAMA:

Mother Water. Colossal water boa, which embodies the spirit protector of the Amazon river father, who inhabits the depths of rivers and lakes tributaries. It feeds on aquatic animals without causing detriment to the ecological system. Rarely rises to the surface it is on these occasions that can cause irreparable damage to the vessels and passengers, making shipwreck and drowning or devoured. Is said to emerge the animal produces a huge swirl and high waves, rare in the rivers and lakes, exposing his massive head resting on a neck protruding upright to a height of four meters, displacing it by the midstream or cocha, plunging it at intervals, until finally plunges to reappear no more. At other times, the animal comes to the surface and remains above water, crossed from one side of the river, causing the effect of a giant fallen tree that dam water, forming strong currents dangerous to navigation. He lives in the jungle aguajales low or low areas or flood in the Peruvian jungle.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ART SHIPIBO (meaning of their symbols) • The Shipibo, as a man of the jungle, is in close contact with their environment and is part of it, what advantage wisely. Somehow knows that everything is interconnected. Knowledge of this relationship that present all building elements of this biosphere, represent all the original and enigmatic designs presented in their crafts. • Shipibo art have developed a highly sophisticated geometric designs, rich in meaning. The Shipibo world is full of designs that pass the visible world to the invisible world and back. • These designs had a code meaning, writing esoteric cosmology related Shipibo and their vision of the universe, now the meaning of these designs have almost lost. They say the sky full of stars is the same as below, all full of paths, make their skirts embroidered in white on black background to represent the light of the stars, form designs because they see these trails in the sky. • The four sacred colors for Shipibo are red, yellow, white and black, red, yellow and white are associated with the sun, green, blue and black with the moon, it is customary to use complementary colors to look balance at all. • Shaman is the responsibility of rescuing the designs of the celestial world and transmission to women. The reproduction of the designs on all objects of material culture gave power and protection to housing, to people and to the whole group. Seen from this perspective, the loss of traditional motifs not only mean an impoverishment of the environment, but also the spirit. Shipibo Woman creatively expressed by the art of drawing. Highly complex geometric designs are passed from mother to daughter. The reasons may appear in dreams or in altered states by ingestion of psychotropic plants. Women also can order directly to the shaman. A great artist is respected throughout the Shipibo. His designs are studied and admired by other women. The great artists practicing spiritual disciplines such as fasting and sexual abstinence to increase the power of their imagination and enhance their creative abilities. • The central motif is Ronin Shipibo design, the cosmic serpent that combines all imaginable designs on your skin. In the mythological time showed his skin ancestral Shipibo women. The main line of each design always represents Ronin, who created the universe and symbolizes God. • Even if they like, never see two pieces of the same design, these designs are an endless path in the imagination of the Shipibo, give the impression that they can be compressed into a much more limited, though widespread cover the whole world were not limited by the edge of the fabric or the vessel. • The Shipibo say there is a huge cross in the center of the sky. This invisible cross is represented by the constellation of the Southern Cross overlooking the Ucayali sky during the dry months. The missionaries were astonished to learn that the cross was a sacred figure by Shipibo since ancient times. Ahabah blog text © Jose Chamorro.
